Gonchar shows signs

It's no secret that Gonchar has been underwhelming in his first 10 games as a Pen. But the goal he scored in OT really showed you why they signed him to that big contract.

He made at least 4 moves and then shot the goal through the 5 hole to give the Pens a crucial win in OT, beating the Devils 4-3. Caron was mostly solid in net.

Talbot, Lasse and Recchi also scored in the game. The two call ups Christensen and Whitney had 10 shots, and the team played better defense for the most part. But a bad defensive lapse in the third gave the Devils life and allowed them to tie it up.

Hopefully they'll use the victory to build some much needed confidence.

The defense was much improved and played reasonably smart and with a good effort all game. Two of the goals were because of guys making stupid mistakes and not covering anybody. The one goal was a direct result of Poapst Blue Ribbon falling down and when he got up he just stood there instead of checking a guy with the puck.

The new guys gave a good effort. Whitney was very solid. I didn't miss Melichar at all. Scuderi played and played pretty well. I didn't notice any of the defensemen really, and that is a good sign.

Gonchar had his obligatory 3rd period bad penalty that resulted in the obligatory "here we go again!" power play goal for the opposition, but he was able to redeem himself by playing Kovalev and stickhandling through the entire New Jersey team in overtime and placing the puck deftly through the 5-hole of goaltender Christensen.

Crosby was quiet, as was Mario. The power play isn't moving enough. We do alot of standing around when we get the puck in the defensive zone instead of skating. Palffy had a ton of chances. Rechhi gave 110% as usual.

Hopefully we can string this together and right the ship with a couple more wins on this roadtrip.
