Pens Fall to Sens 4-1

I'm hoping they're just not trying that hard cause the games don't count.

Palffy scored the goal from Matt Hussey and Ryan Whitney.

Fleury stopped 35 of 39.

Tomorrow's game will be on CSN, channel 629 for those w/ Directv, so I'll be able to get my first look at the team.

SI's Penguins Preseason Preview

SI.com hockey writer Darren Eliot posts his Pens preview and asks his 5 key questions:

1) Will Thibault flourish in Pittsburgh?
2) Outside Gonchar and Tarnstrom, which blueliner will come up big this season?
3) How will phenom Crosby hold up for an entire NHL season?
4) At some point, will the Pens try to add some center depth?
5) Despite a thin defense, can the Pens make the playoffs?

Pen lose to Sens 3-0 to remain winless in the preseason

The Dominator was dominant. Hasek stops 19 shots (19?!?) to shut out the Mario-less and Crosby-less Pens last night 3-0.

The powerplay was a punchless 0-9.

The teams rematch tonight in Wilkes-Barre.

Crosby plays first preseason game

Crosby had one helper in his first preseason game with the Pens. Staggy on the radio was saying that Croz needed a bit of time to adjust to the size of the NHL players.

It seems to be that he is going to be a Wayne Gretzky type player. A guy who is small, flys around, makes great passes, and is generally just a smart hockey player.

Hopefully Crosby learns to stay away from the front of the net when huge hulking defensemen like Hal Gill are patrolling there.

Pens fall to Bruins in OT-5-4

The Penguins got goals from Gonchar, Recchi, VandenBussche and Palffy, and an assist from Sidney Crosby but still fall to the Boston Bruins 5-4 in overtime.

3 of 4 goals came from the powerplay and they did manage to win the dry run shoot out.

So that is something.

Roster for Tonight's Game

The lineup for tonight's game in WBS.
Mario, Crosby and Recchi...money!

Pens fall 3-2 in OT Shootout

In a sloppy game in which Mario and Crosby didn't play. The Pens got their first taste of the NHLs new shootout rule.

Pens took a 2-0 lead off of goals from Ryan Malone and Michel Ouellet. Columbus came back w/ two goals from Malhotra and Marchant.

Koltsov was the only Pen to get a goal in the shootout. Columbus got two off Zherdev and Balastik.

The other notable thing was the Pens had about 19 penalties forcing their penalty killers to be on the ice almost the entire game.

Crosby Gets 3 Assists in First Scrimmage

From SI.com
Recchi was the beneficiary of two Crosby assists, the second a model example of the vision and instincts that allowed Crosby to accumulate 183 assists in 121 junior games.

"The defensemen went down and got out of position," Crosby said, relating what went through his mind as he had the puck in the right face-off circle. "So then the goalie had no choice but to play the shot so I knew Mark had an open shot. I gave him a quick look and got him the puck."

And this:
Crosby's pass to set up Jonathan Filewich's second goal might have been even better. Skating down the boards through the neutral zone, Crosby flipped a pass over a defenseman's stick almost directly onto the blade of Filewich, who took advantage of a clear path to the net to beat goalie Sebastien Caron.

My only question is who is Jonathan Filewich?

Pretty much just like your week..

This week new Pittsburgh resident Sidney Crosby attended his first Steelers game, signed 7 endorsment deals, including Reebok and Gatorade, and agreed to appear in 2 more national (non-sports) magazines (GQ and Vanity Fair). And oh yeah he participated in his first NHL practice

AP Reporter Alan Robertson reports how all eyes were on the rookie .

``I think he can be a superstar,'' said LeClair, who's scheduled to skate on a line with Recchi and Crosby during a training camp game Thursday. ``Everybody is watching him, but he handles it so well. It's tough when everyone is watching you on every shift ... but he's very mature for his age.''

Ron Francis Retires

Looks like he won't be playing for the Pens this year.

Francis played 23 years in the NHL for Hartford, Pittsburgh, Carolina, and Toronto, and is going to be a hall-of-famer.

Interesting article about the first day of Pens traning camp and Crosby living with Lemieux.

"Buy Sam a Drink..."
New Contract for Mike Lange too

FSN Pittsburgh re-upped the "voice of the Penguins" to a multi-year deal.

Could you honestly imagine anyone else calling Pens games?

Orpik signs..

Defenseman and former first round pick Brooks Orpik resigned with Pittsburgh today. No terms on the deal yet

Another physical d-man to protect Crosby.

To complete the Tri-fecta Mario deal done

The guy that writes the Pens press releases has sure been busy today Mario Lemieux was signed to a new deal. No details yet.

Sid Signs

Crosby and the Pens inked a deal that could end up being worth $4M if incentives kick in. Not bad coin for someone barely out of highschool.

Pens trade Beech to Preds for Draft Pick

According to a press release on the Penguins website Kris Beech has been shipped to Nashville for a conditional draft pick.

Thus ending the Penguins career of all three players: Michael Sivek, Ross Lupaschuk and Beechy, they got from the Caps for Jagr.

Then again they also got cash and they got to not pay him $10M a year.

Pens Sign Physical Odelein

The Pens signed a physical presence on the blueline today in the person of Lyle Odelein.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05245/564739.stm

Odelein is 37 and played in every game for Florida last NHL season and tallied 16 points and 88 PIMs. He seems to be one of the cogs that we were looking for. We still need another center or two. Yannick Perrault is still available and he is the best faceoff man in the NHL.

Artie's back

Kevin Stevens is back with the Pens...as a scout..

"We're delighted to have Kevin back where he belongs, with the Penguins," said Patrick. "Kevin brings a passion to the game that is second to none and we're happy he will be part of our organization, contributing to our future successes."

Ryan Malone Signed to a One Year Deal

http://www2.sportsnet.ca/nhl/free_agent_tracker.html

Malone is a good young player. He scored 20 goals last year for the Pens and hopefully he can continue to play good hockey this year in what will probably be a diminished role.

Next up to be signed are Orpik, Croz, and Mario. Plus there are still many free agents out there, guys like Marchment, Andreychuk, Ron Francis, Damphousse, who are still unemployed.
